The Baton Rouge Satellite Library was created in 1981 under the
direction of Judge E. Gordon West. It was located in the old Federal Building
at 707 Florida Street, and was staffed on a part- time basis until 1982, when
the Library received approval and funding for a full-time librarian. The
library remained in that location until October 1994 when it was relocated to
the Garden Level of the newly constructed Russell B. Long Federal Building
& U.S. Courthouse at 777 Florida Street under the leadership of Chief Judge
Frank J. Polozola.
The Library's primary mission is to provide research services to
the judicial officers, their staffs and court personnel in the Middle District
of Louisiana. The library provides excellent resources for primary and
secondary research. The collection of legal material includes statutes,
treatises, loose-leaf services, law reviews and other research sources. Only
attorneys who are admitted to the Bar of the Middle District of Louisiana may
use the library.
Maralena R. Murphy, the Baton Rouge Satellite Librarian, began
her judicial career in 1979 with the Clerk's Office for the Middle District of
Louisiana. Maralena was promoted in 1982 to the Fifth Circuit and assumed the
full-time position as librarian. She attended Louisiana State University and
received her Paralegal certificate in 1988. Maralena currently serves as the
President of the Baton Rouge Paralegal Association.
